Patriarchal Delegate of Western Europe and the Representative of the Catholicos of All Armenians in Vatican
Archbishop Khajag Barsamian was born in 1951 in Arabkir, Turkey.
He received his primary education at the Holy Cross Seminary of Istanbul. From 1967 to 1971, studied at St. James Theological Seminary of Jerusalem. In 1971 he was ordained as a celibate priest by Patriarch of Jerusalem, Archbishop Yeghishe Derderian. In 1973, he received the rank of Vardapet. He served as the Assistant Dean of Jarangavorats Theological Seminary at the Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem. Afterwards, he continued his studies at General Theological Seminary of New York, Saint John’s University of Minneapolis, Gregorian University of Rome and the Eastern Institution of Oxford. He delivered lectures in the US, Italy, England, Germany, Jerusalem and Armenia. He carried out research work at the libraries of Mkhitarists of Venice and the Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem, as well as at Yerevan Matenadaran. Together with his education he also assumed pastoral responsibilities in different districts of Istanbul, Jaffa, Haifa, Ramleh and different states of the US.
From May 1990 to 2018, heserved as Primate of the Eastern Diocese of the Armenian Church in North America. In 1990, he was ordained a Bishop by the Catholicos of All Armenians, His Holiness Vasken I. In 1992, he recieved the rank of Archbishop.
Archbishop Khajag Barsamian has been involved in governing bodies of number of religious and ecumenical organizations, particularly the National Council of Churches, the World Council of Churches, the Appeal of Conscience Foundation, Religion In American Life, the National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations and the American Bible Society. He is the president of the charitable organization “Fund for Armenian Relief”. He has also contributed greatly to establishing friendly relations with other Christian denominations.
In 2018, by the Patriarchal Order of His Holiness Karekin II, Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, Archbishop Khajag Barsamian, has been appointed to serve as Patriarchal Delegate of Western Europe and Representative of the Catholicos of All Armenians in Vatican (residence in Rome).
He is a member of the Supreme Spiritual Council. He was awarded prizes of scientific and educational institutions of different countries, including the Gold Medal of the RA NAS in 2004. He is an Honorary Professor at the State Academy of Fine Arts.
